Populus ‘Crows Nest’
A fast-growing, narrow-crowned poplar bred in New Zealand. A PVR-licensed variety from a backcross between a P. x euramericana hybrid and P. nigra.
Its steep branch angles produce a tight, columnar crown approaching that of a Lombardy poplar, ideal where width is limited. The branches stay light, so little or no side trimming is needed.
New leaves flush dark reddish-bronze in mid-late September, maturing to dark green, then turning brilliant yellow in autumn.
Used mainly for horticultural shelterbelts and windbreaks, and as a soil conservation tree thanks to reasonable drought tolerance. It also makes a striking specimen tree. Moderate rust resistance.
We’ve now sold out of Populus ‘Crows Nest’ for the 2026 season. If you’re looking for a similar upright-growing poplar, we recommend Populus ‘Chiba‘ as the best alternative.
