Quercus robur x Tuber melanosporum

Common Oak - Périgord Truffle

The classic oak tree of NZ parks and large gardens.  Tolerant of a wide range of sites, great in the wind.  Deciduous.  Hardy.  Inoculated with the Perigord Black Truffle (Tuber melanosporum).

The Périgord truffle is one of the most commercially valuable truffles in the world because of its powerful, sweet aroma. The dark brown, warty-skinned fruiting bodies can reach up to the size of a grapefruit. Truffles become ready for harvest in mid-winter, and grow best in high alkaline limestone soil with either an Oak or Hazelnut host tree.

Most of our current crop has already been allocated, however we are taking expressions of interest for the remaining 2027 supply. To discuss availability, please contact truffles@southernwoods.co.nz

We strongly recommend proper site preparation and prior-research before planting our truffle inoculated trees. For more information click here.

How does shipping work?

Freight is calculated automatically at checkout for smaller orders. For bulkier consignments, we’ll be back in touch to confirm a freight price. See our Shipping Information for more details.

North Island Customers: Shipping costs can be significant (and sometimes exceed the plant value), so combining items into a larger order helps keep it cost-effective.
