Tall, straight-stemmed tree with small rounded crown. Very dense, hard, highly-durable, fine-textured light-brown to pink timber, matching the quality of tropical hardwoods such as mahogany and teak.  Grows well on fertile, well-drained soils, including clay and limestone. Highly sought after for untreated vineyard posts in Marlborough, as well as a wide range of structural uses. The timber is both stronger than pine and does not need CCA treatment. Creamy-white flowers from November-February. Evergreen. Avoid hard frosts, suitable for Northland to Canterbury.
