The most common Astelia species seen growing in scrub and forest throughout New Zealand. Has attractive broad-green, architectural leaves and scented spring flowers. Orange berries on female plants attract birds. Best in sheltered semi-shade. Prefers good drainage. Hardier than A. chathamica. Evergreen.
