At Southern Woods Nursery we deliver healthy, thriving plants to customers across New Zealand, from small garden shrubs to large specimen trees. Here’s everything you need to know about how we ship and what to expect.

Our Process

Shipping live plants requires specialist care and we’ve been doing it for over 30 years. Whether you’re ordering a few herbs or an entire landscape’s worth of trees, we pack each order to ensure your plants arrive in great condition and ready to thrive. Our process includes

  • Moisture-protected packaging to keep roots hydrated
  • Secure boxes or pallets for safe transport
  • Trusted freight networks and couriers, depending on the size and destination of your order

All online orders will be picked, packaged and sent directly from Southern Woods in Christchurch. Small orders are sent by standard courier. Larger or bulkier orders are often packed onto pallets and delivered via our trusted freight partners.

Understanding Plant Freight Charges

We understand freight costs can be a deciding factor when shopping for plants and trees online. Unlike packaged goods, plant freight depends on several complex factors:

  • Size & Weight: Taller trees and bulk bundles take up more room and may require pallet delivery.
  • Delivery Location: Rural areas and remote regions may incur higher rates and additional charges.
  • Packaging Type: Some plants can go in courier boxes; others must be freighted upright on pallets.
  • Seasonal Charges: Delivery providers sometimes adjust pricing due to demand or fuel costs.

We always aim to offer you the most cost-effective delivery method without compromising plant quality.

FAQ's About Shipping

Do you offer nationwide delivery?

Yes! We deliver plants and trees to customers all over New Zealand, from Invercargill to Kaitaia.

However orders to the Chatham Islands, Great Barrier Island and Stewart Island are possible by arrangement only.

How much does it cost?

Freight costs vary depending on the size of your order and where it’s going. Smaller orders (like a few shrubs or herbs) are usually more affordable and sent by courier, while larger trees or bulk orders may need pallet delivery, which can cost more.
