Leptospermum scoparium – High NPA
Manuka seedlings grown from a high MGO & DHA seed collection area in Westland NZ.
Manuka is a fast-growing tree with small, scented leaves and single white flowers. Attractive to bees, being the nectar source for the highly valued, antibacterial Manuka honey. Fantastic nurse crop for native revegetation. Thrives on moist sites, even tolerant of some wet. Susceptible to scale and sooty mould, although this provides a food source for birds. Requires full sun. Evergreen.
This seed is collected in Westland NZ from wild populations of naturally occurring Leptospermum scoparium in an area were honey is harvested with high levels of MGO & DHA. Both are strongly related to the activity of manuka honey, which we measure as NPA/UMF.
MGO (Methylglyoxal) Scientific research has now proven that the naturally occurring compound methylglyoxal is what gives Manuka honey its’ unique antibacterial activity. It is found in high quantities in only some New Zealand manuka honey
DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) A naturally occurring compound that is found in high quantities only in Manuka flower nectar and honey. A precursor for Methylglyoxal.
